FSU Presidential Search Website Launched! www.president.fsu.edu/search

pressearch

On July 21st, 2009, the Board of Trustees hired Academic Search Inc. to assist the university in our search for a successor to President T.K. Wetherell, who announced his resignation in June.

While the presidential search is expected to get under way in the coming weeks, we have not established a time frame for selecting the next president. I expect the search advisory committee, which will include students, faculty, staff and members of the community, will likely be established before the next Trustee meeting in September.

To ensure that open and complete information is available throughout the search, the university has created a special Web site, http://president.fsu.edu/search, that will be active throughout the search and will serve as the main source of information relating to it. Members of the public may email their comments or suggestions for qualifications for potential candidates to presidentialsearch@fsu.edu.

As always, I will attempt to keep the student body up to date on any changes as they occur.

Bright Futures Changes: EFFECTIVE FALL 2009!

Please spread the word regarding these important Bright Futures Program changes for the upcoming year! Be on the lookout for a communication campaign in early/mid August!
-Rob Jakubik, Student Body President

Effective Fall 2009 –
Senate Bill 1696, passed during the 2009 Florida Legislative Session and signed into law by Governor Charlie Crist made certain changes to the Florida Bright Futures Program. A summary of the changes may be found below, or you may access the full bill here: Senate Bill 1696

Changes percentage-based awards to fixed amounts:
* The Florida Bright Futures Academic Scholarship will now pay $126 per credit hour
* The Florida Bright Futures Medallion Scholarship and the Florida Bright Futures Gold Seal Scholarship will now pay $95 per credit hour

Removes college-related-expense awards (aka book awards) for Academic Scholars.

Removes payment for any lab fees

Requires repayment for Withdrawal from course after end of Drop/Add
Requires repayment of Bright Futures scholarship funds received by the University for student course drops or withdrawals after the end of Drop/Add. This means that if you drop a class after Drop/Add you will have to repay the Bright Futures award you received for that course. The last day of fall Drop/Add for the Fall 2009 term is Thursday, August 27.

• Changes number of completed hours required for renewal
Changes the number of earned hours needed to renew the Bright Futures Scholarship from 12 to 24 semester hours per academic year, or a prorated number dependent upon the number of hours disbursed per term.

Recommendations:

* Plan your courseload carefully
* Verify your courseload prior to the end of Drop/Add (midnight August 27, 2009 for Fall 2009) – particularly important if you add, drop, or do not attend the first day of a class during the drop/add period.

For further information on the Bright Futures program, visit the Florida Department of Education’s Bright Futures website.

SGA beats the heat with barbecue
Organizations turn out to welcome new and returning students

Several hundred students gathered this past Tuesday, June 30 on Florida State University’s Union Green for the “Welcome to FSU! BBQ,” hosted by the Student Government Association.

The event was an opportunity for first year, summer C students to meet new friends and get involved with many of the student organizations on campus, as well as for returning students to get reacquainted with old friends and with the campus.

Students were able to familiarize themselves with Florida State University organizations, clubs and the many extra-curricular activities that their school has to offer.

Along with information about various organizations, SGA offered plenty of free hot dogs and hamburgers that attracted students in between their classes.

FSU junior Hila Miskin braved the heat to get some free barbecue.

“It’s really hot out here, but I’m hoping that the barbecue will be worth it,” Miskin said as she waited in line for food.

Senior Joslyn Rubin came upon the gathering by chance while on campus.

“I saw a large crowd gathering on my way to class, and I decided to stop by and see what this event had to offer,” said Rubin.

Aside from the free food, students listened to music provided by a live DJ and were able to get their pictures taken in a free photo booth provided in order to give those present a tangible memory of what may have been their first social event at FSU.

For more information about SGA or how to get involved in future activities around campus, visit sga.fsu.edu.
